Summary

A MISSING GIRL

AN ORPHANAGE FULL OF SECRETS

Hazel wants a new life。

She’s thirty years old, single, and her private investigation business is months away from folding。

Her luck takes a turn when Madeline Hemsley, a mysterious socialite, pays Hazel a visit with an offer too enticing to resist。 An orphan girl has disappeared from a children’s home—The Orphanage By The Lake, as the locals call it—and Madeline wants Hazel to find her。

At first glance, it appears to be a standard runaway case, but as Hazel plunges into the investigation, she finds signs of something more: unexplained blood stains, cryptic symbols, sinister figures shadowing her every move。 The more she digs, the more she realizes that The Orphanage By The Lake holds terrifying secrets, and even worse…

…so does Madeline。

Great readKept you guessing。。。 From start to finish。。 But I think we should have gotten the reaction of the girl being told that she had a mother and what that mother had done to find her

What a great book, very detective noir。 I loved Hazel Cho and enjoyed learning more about her throughout the intriguing plot。The book was steadily paced, with a few curveballs thrown in to send you off the track and the storyline was immersive and drew me in。The normalised setting against such a horrific backdrop was well worked and the characters were written perfectly, to the point where I needed to know more about them, even the bad ones。 Would love to see how Hazels agency pans out and I can What a great book, very detective noir。 I loved Hazel Cho and enjoyed learning more about her throughout the intriguing plot。The book was steadily paced, with a few curveballs thrown in to send you off the track and the storyline was immersive and drew me in。The normalised setting against such a horrific backdrop was well worked and the characters were written perfectly, to the point where I needed to know more about them, even the bad ones。 Would love to see how Hazels agency pans out and I can’t wait to read more。 。。。more

The orphanage by the lake follows Hazel Cho, a private investigator living in NYC who needs a big win and a stack load of cash to keep business afloat。 Enter Madeline who wants to hire her services to find her god daughter who went missing from an orphanage six months ago。 Although it’s still an active police investigation, no new leads have come up in a long time and it’s clear they aren’t invested in finding answers。I really enjoyed reading the behind the scenes investigative work, following the threads until new leads come up, interviewing people who don’t want to talk and what their motives may be for potentially helping to cover something more sinister up。This book is action packed full of crooked cops, car chases, illegal pop up clubs, kidnapping rings and more! I was a big fan of Hazels room mate Kenny and all the sweet things he did for her。 This is my first Daniel Miller book and definitely won’t be my last! I would even love to hear more about Hazel and her next adventure in the PI world! Thank you to the author, NetGalley and Houndstooth books for the ARC! Sometimes I want to read a thriller but overall, it is not my preferred genre。 I am incredibly particular about the genre and often trying to guess what will happen next either distracts me entirely or I guess it too early in and lose interest。 This was not the case with The Orphanage By The Lake。 Hazel was initially written in the way a male writer writes a female character (but without the sexualization that would cause me to DNF) but once the story sucked me in I forgot about my issues with t Sometimes I want to read a thriller but overall, it is not my preferred genre。 I am incredibly particular about the genre and often trying to guess what will happen next either distracts me entirely or I guess it too early in and lose interest。 This was not the case with The Orphanage By The Lake。 Hazel was initially written in the way a male writer writes a female character (but without the sexualization that would cause me to DNF) but once the story sucked me in I forgot about my issues with the writing of a female character。 The twists and turns of this were fantastic。 It was dark and twisty but in some ways felt lighter than many thrillers。 If you are into thrillers I imagine you will love it and if not, I bet you will still be entertained。 Thank you to NetGalley and Houndstooth Books for the eARC! It starts off kind of slow, but towards the middle of the book, you don’t want to stop reading。 There are sick people in this world。 I know this is fiction, but this stuff happens all the time in our world。

The story kept me on the edge of my seat and I had the urge to read it in almost one sitting。 It kept me guessing and suspicious of everyone。 The writing is good and the characters are well-built, can I say that I like the cover too? I will look into other books written by this author in the future。

I really enjoyed this book。 It really had me hooked completely devoured it。 I wouldn’t say I was completely surprised by the end I kinda had an idea of what was going on, but that didn’t make me like the story any less。 There’s so many pieces of the jigsaw puzzle that you have to put together and possibilities。 Overall a fun, intriguing, fast read。

Thank you to NetGalley and Houndstooth Books for an eARC copy of The Orphanage By The Lake by Daniel G。 Miller。 While the plot (and the cover) drew me towards reading The Orphanage By The Lake, Hazel Cho was。。。honestly there is a reason why she is a struggling private investigator。 There is clearly lack of experience and lack of drive to go back to school or work for a police department to help strengthen the skills needed to be successful in her line of work。 Not to mention her roommate is in t Thank you to NetGalley and Houndstooth Books for an eARC copy of The Orphanage By The Lake by Daniel G。 Miller。 While the plot (and the cover) drew me towards reading The Orphanage By The Lake, Hazel Cho was。。。honestly there is a reason why she is a struggling private investigator。 There is clearly lack of experience and lack of drive to go back to school or work for a police department to help strengthen the skills needed to be successful in her line of work。 Not to mention her roommate is in training for the police force, so it's hard to understand why she won't allow him to help her (but he is often playing video games anyway, so is he actually training at all?) Especially if she knew that things were getting dangerous and even more so after her initial client came after her in her own office。 It felt like research for Hazel Cho as a character and who she was wasn't invested in by the author, which was disappointing。 I also agree that it's odd that a white male is writing a Korean-female character and on top of that, it's very on the verge of way too many bad things are happening to her that does not seem plausible in the time frame given for her case。 It's certainly a quick mystery read, again the premise of the plot was good, but this certainly could have used a lot more editing and revisions。 I'd also say more research as there is no way that Sonia was going to Manhattan for "weekends" when it is a 3 1/2 to 4 hour drive from NYC to Lake George and the Orphanage certainly wasn't in the town of Lake George so that also got me。 It honestly wasn't for me, but may be for someone else。 。。。more

Engrossing & SuspensefulGripping & immersive。 Not super fast-paced, but not slow, either。 Just kept going at a good pace。 Love Hazel Cho! Awesome protagonist! The book kept me engrossed the whole way。 Some twists were a bit predictable, but others were not。 It was hard to tell who, if anyone, could be trusted。 Looking forward to book 2!

Really enjoyed this book。 Also that plot twist, I did not see that coming。 Bummed the next book isn’t out until 2025。 I will be picking it up when it comes out :)

I absolutely ate up this book! I didn't want to put it down。 I was entertained from the first page to the last。 I never felt bored or felt like the material was too repetitive。 It was a really good read, but there was definitely some dark content。 I would normally say check trigger warnings, but unfortunately, it would spoil some of the book。 This was a 4。5⭐️ read for me。 I absolutely ate up this book!
